            <lg type="stanza">
<l>SINCE thought is life, God's martyrdoms were</l>
<l>good,</l>
<l>And saints are trumps, no matter what they did.</l>
<l>Therefore I celebrate Sebastian's blood,</l>
<l>And glory with Lorenzo on his grid</l>
<l>And likewise with all victims, bruised by boulders,</l>
<l>Stabbed with sadistic swords, on pikes impaled,</l>
<l>Who propped their Paradise on bleeding shoulders</l>
<l>And bred tumultuous pomps when princes failed.</l>

<l>They died for gentle Jesus and His dreamed</l>
<l>Utopia. From a crookèd Roman cross,</l>
<l>Heavenward through crimson clouds their</l>
<l>conquest streamed</l>
<l>To touch His lips in everlasting loss.</l>
