                <p> Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to facilitate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded. </p>

                <p>More than the modification <add place="above">&amp; addition</add> you will see —
                    I <hi rend="underline">can't</hi> alter this paper. It is the strong expression
                    of what I have longed to express for some time. — Can't help it. — even though
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#GaskellElizabeth">Mrs. Gaskell</persName>
                    is a friend whom I value much. — I think it <hi rend="underline">ought</hi> to
                    be said.</p>
                <p><persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ChambersRobert">Mr. R. C.</persName> can either
                    put an editorial note stating that he differs from me — or omit the article
                    altogether: — it can go elsewhere. Only in that case please return the <choice>
                        <abbr>M.S.</abbr>
                        <expan>manuscript</expan>
                    </choice> — if possible — if not this corrected proof — because I ought to
                    explain that it is a refused paper &amp; the reason. — </p>
                <p>I found in your bundle more journals than I used — so I return them with this —
                    &amp; thanks — They are intact — just as sent.</p>
                <p>Will that “<title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Consolation">Consolation</title>”
                    of <rs type="person"><persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#LeslieEliza">Miss
                            Leslie</persName>'s poor <title ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Samaratine"
                            >Samaratine</title></rs> — have a chance of going in &amp; being paid
                    for? — I hope so — She is so poor.</p>

Mr. R. C. can either put an editorial note stating that he differs from me — or omit the article altogether: — it can go elsewhere. Only in that case please return the M.S. manuscript — if possible — if not this corrected proof — because I ought to explain that it is a refused paper & the reason. —

I found in your bundle more journals than I used — so I return them with this — & thanks — They are intact — just as sent.

Will that “Consolation” of Miss Leslie's poor Samaratine — have a chance of going in & being paid for? — I hope so — She is so poor.
