My dear Sir

Our last transaction failed — yet I think I profited by your criticism — as after it I wrote Christian's Mistake over again — & I suppose improved it — for it has succeeded well. —

Since, I have finished another one vol. volume tale — which no one has seen yet. I should like it to appear anonymously in a Magazine, & then to be puslbished as a whole & bound. — Are you inclined for this — & if so can you tell me at on average what sum you would give me for it? — I ask this — because I have fixed a sum in my own mind: — & if you read the M.S. manuscript & then offered me a much less sum — I should only lose time: which I cannot well afford to do. —

It is a Scotch story — though not very Scotch: it has the remarkable peculiarity of being not a love story — & its title is "The Last Earl of Cairnforth".

Yours very truly DMMulock –
