                    Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions
                    and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a
                    line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we
                    have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to
                    faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.</p>

                <p>Your Printer libels the unlucky Author shamefully: In every instance but one –
                    when the proofs were detained at <placeName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Glasgow"
                        >Glasgow</placeName> &amp; I was here – the proofs have been sent back by
                    the next post. But printer is awfully irregular <add place="above">at
                        times</add>. Today I have to write &amp; complain of missing revises – 2
                    sheets omitted. However <hi rend="underline">don’t you</hi> scold him. We’ll
                    settle our affairs together.</p>
                <p>I want a revise of “<title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#AliceLearmont">Alice
                        Learmont</title>” sent – if you please to make all sure. And oh: if you <hi
                        rend="underline">would</hi> send the drawings – I am dying to see what has
                    been made of my poor fairies – </p>
                <p>Most truly there is a deep moral in the story of the old man &amp; <add
                        place="above">his</add>
                    <unclear reason="illegible">afs</unclear> – Cut out the “Scotch” bits – &amp;
                    the “fairy –” bits – &amp; there would be no story left at all. – I have had
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ChambersRobert">Mr. R.
                    Chambers</persName>’ advice about difficult bits of Scotch – so I know <hi
                        rend="underline">that’s</hi> all right &amp; <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ChambersAnne">Mrs. Chambers</persName> has read over
                    the proofs &amp; thinks the story “nicer than <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DickensCharles">Dickens</persName>. – ” But that’s
                    possibly prejudiced criticism – only I tell – not from vanity heaven knows – but
                    for my publisher’s consolation.</p>
                <p>I am glad of the wee bit of news concerning your household – whom I always
                    cordially remember. Love to them – </p>
