Dear Sir

I do not often ask a favor favour – this one I might ask at second-hand: but prefer writing direct to you. If “Richard II be played again – will you give me two orders – not for myself but for two country friends who are here but for a very short time. I am anything but a play-goer – As theatres are now – & never saw “Richard II” till a few days since – but I don’t think I will ever forget it: – such a thorough bit out of English history – such a satisfying mouthful of Shakespeare – we, who like nature in any shape better than sham “drama” which is usually anything but nature – owe you a very great deal. –

Pardon this from one who never till now saw one of your “revivals” & has no right but only this pleasure of saying it. –

Yours very truly, Dinah Mulock – Lynover Cottage – Kilburn
1 Dinah is probably referring to Charles Kean’s 1857 revival of Richard II. Kean's production of Shakespeare's play was first performed at the Princess's Theatre, London on March 12, 1857 and had a run of 112 performances in the same year. These dates coincide with Dinah's residence at Lynover Cottage (c. 1855-1858).
