5 Brecknock Crescent June 18 – 49 1849 My dear Sir

On some accounts it is satisfactory to me that the novel should be delayed for a few months. While the proofs of Vol Volume III were passing through my hands, I noticed one portion which I longed to extend & remodel – in fact it once crossed my mind to write to you on the subject – but I thought the speedy publication would not allow time. Thus, I shall have no difficulty in making the addition you desire.

But, as regards pecuniary arrangements, this sudden change in your plans becomes a most serious inconvenience to me. I believe the agreement made for me by Mr. Hervey, was – that I should receive £50 on delivery of the M.S. manuscript & £100 more on the day of publication which I understand most positively was to be immediately. The idea was of course confirmed by the fact of my receiving proofs up to the middle of Vol Volume III – Therefore depending on the speedy receipt of this sum, I have employed myself entirely on a little Christmas-book, which I intended to send for your decision when completed. For this, I have neglected all other work, & consequently, unless I receive an advance on the postponed novel I shall find myself for some months with an income of nihil.

Under these circumstances, will you consider a trespass on your kindness if I ask you to advance me, now, £50 more – the remaining £50 to be received, as before agreed on the day of publication?

I need not remind you that hitherto my part in this affair has been punctually fulfilled – that the MS manuscript was delivered to you by the first week in April with all the additions the printer then thought necessary. – & that whenever I have received proofs, I have returned them – within a few hours, invariably – to Mr. Hervey, as was your wish.

I shall be most happy to finish the required matter immediately – before I leave Town, if you so desire it, otherwise – as my absence will not exceed a month, immediately on my return.

I think, when you consider the matter – the request I now make is scarcely one that you will decline.

Very sincerely yours DMMulock –

It is scarcely necessary for me to say how obliged I shall be by a reply at your earliest convenience – Perhaps I may as well observe that the part I wish to remodel is about the middle of Vol Volume III – relating to second meeting of Philip and Eleanor – I think it will bear an extension of at least three chapters – which will exactly answer your purpose.
