Oct October 16 th Dear Mr. Chapman

Thanks for the cheque – £50 – & I will probably not ask for the other £50 – till I ask for the whole sum on publication. Which, by the way – when will it be? Before or after Mrs. Gaskill Gaskell ? – No proofs have come for a long time – when they do they had better come here – 7. Mornington Crescent – where I stay till my wee house is ready –

– Do you know I had yesterday a question, whether I would write a novel for a magazine – price £400 – – A strong temptation – but I can’t make up my mind. – I won’t write a bad book, even for £400 – & if I find I can work well – I would rather work for you – – However this is merely in future - - I’ll tell you before declining.

Sampson Low vowed on questioning, that he only mentioned £20 to you! – not £30 – was it true? –

Very sincerely yours DMM –
