1874 My dear little one

This is a letter that Ned Bewley would write to you. He went & found the flowers, which grow about there – & which we never saw before, did we? – And then he stood by me & dictated the letter just as I have written it down. He is a very clever boy – & so nice. I hope he will come & play with you next year – & his little sister May. –

Papa was so delighted with your letter & so was I. We got them just before he started for a day's excursion with Ned's papa & uncle. I have got up to dinner – but I lie on the sofa all day long – I shall only just be able to get into the train & come home on Friday – & I dare say my little girl will have to put me to bed when I come home – which will be great fun. –

Has anyone heard anything of Mrs. Orrinsmith? – I wish you & Miss Jennings would go & see her – & tell her I am bringing her three plants of scented fern from Chagford Dartmoor – & she must have a pot ready to plant them in – as they will have been kept alive nearly a week with a damp sponge – but I shall leave them as we pass, that she may plant them at once – They are rather rare – & I think would be better in the house all winter – Can you remember all this long message, & tell it her yourself my darling?

Your loving, Mama –

Give my love to Alice's mama – & say I am sure to be with her on Friday. –

Tell Keene I shall be quite pleased to see my rose-garden prepared for planting. –

Love to Miss Jennings & thanks for her kind care of everything and thank Hermione for her nice letter. –
