                            head of the first page. The letter's first line, "What a blur", is
                            written beside an ink smudge in the upper left corner.</p>

                <p>Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as
                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbrieviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to faciliate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

                <p>I hope you will receive this on <date when="--12-31">your Birth day</date>.
                    Thanks for your pretty card and nice note. <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MulockAnn">Aunt Anne</persName> is much better and
                    sends her love. <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#WrightGeorge">Uncle
                        Wright</persName> has been ill now quite well. This mild weather suits
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HoblynFrancis">Uncle Francis</persName>.
                        <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MulockAlicia">Aunt Alicia</persName>
                    bright and well. I have had Bronchitis rather severe but I am better I am
                    thankful to say but feel rather weak to write more or to dear <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#DMC">Mamma</persName>. My fond love to her for the
                    lovely cards she sent me. </p>
