Dec December 1st THE CORNER HOUSE SHORTLANDS BROMLEY KENT My dear Mr. Blackett,

“Hannah” will make two part – in fact “fat” volumes – I shall only just get it in – within those limits. You forget that I wrote a Noble Life for one vol volume . it was you who put it into two. – And I believe, though I am not quite sure – it was the same with Two Marriages. – However “Hannah” will be all right. – I was told last night by the solicitor to the Society for promoting the bill that they mean this session to make a great struggle – as Gladstone , Bright the Archbishop – & Bishop Temple – are all on their side. – Suppose if all magazines fail you liked the book at once yourself – say in May – & caught the session? – It might do well, – If the book is passed this session – the book’s interest would be less – Let me know with as little delay as possible what you decide – you will get in a few days complete copy of “A Brave Lady” – but will you go yourself & speak to Mr. Macmillan about the date of publication.

This is all of my own business – now of other people’s. – In a letter today M. Guizot commissioned me to make an arrangement for him about a book he has been long engaged in. & is now being published by Blackett & C.o' “Histoire de France — racontée à mes petits enfants” – in fact on the principle of Scott’s Tales of a Grandfather – It will be in four large volumes – fully illustrated by a man who is said to be equal to Gustave Doré. – M. Guizot has had an offer from Fields & Osgood—Boston, to publish the English translation & exclusively for America – but he has not closed with it – as he is rather inclined to have a good English publisher either instead of the American firm, or in conjunction with them. He asks me to speak to Smith Elder, or Harlan – but I thought I would first name the matter to you. And M. Guizot’s French is difficult – being so extremely terse & classic. No slip-shod translator will do: nor would he consent to it. –

I believe in France the “Histoire” is thought much of – & would doubtless do well both in England and America

You will write to me soon? & I will send your letter on to M. Guizot. –
