         <p>This indenture made the day of April in the Year of our Lord <date when="1797">One
               Thou-sand Seven hundred and ninety seven</date>. Witnesseth that <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_LV1">Levi
               Vankeuren</persName> and <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_JO1">Jacob
               Ostrander</persName> Overseers of the Poor of the Town of
               <placeName>Shawangunck</placeName> in the County of Ulster and State of
               <placeName>New York</placeName> by and with the consent of <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_JK1">James
               Kain</persName> and <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_JB1">Johannis
               Bruyn</persName> Esquires, two of the Justices of the peace for said County, have put
            placed and bound, and by these pre-sents do put place and bind <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1">Benjamin
               Evans</persName> a <hi rend="underline">Pauper</hi> apprentice to <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_NH1">Nicholas
               Hoffman</persName> of the same place and to his Heirs, with him to serve and dwell
            from the day of the date of these presents, until the said <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >apprentice</persName> shall arrive at the age of twenty one years fully to be
            complete and ended accord-ing to the Act in that Case made and provided. <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >He</persName> having been of the age of four years, and ten months the day and Year
            above written, during which said term the said <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >Appren-tice</persName>, his <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_NH1"
               >Master</persName> shall well and faithfully serve in all law-ful business according
            to his wit power and ability and shall honestly and orderly in all things behave and
            demean himself toward his said <persName

               >Master</persName> during said term; and the said <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_NH1">Nicholas
               Hoffman</persName>for himself his Heirs, Executors and Administrators doth covenant
            to and with the Overseers of the Poor of the Town aforesaid and their and every of their
            succes-sors for the time being, that he the said <persName

               Hoff-man</persName> the said <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >apprentice</persName> shall teach or cause to be taught and instructed to read and
            write, and during said term provide and allow unto his said <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >apprentice</persName> competent and sufficient Meat drink apparel washing and
            lodging, and other things necessary and fit for such an <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >apprentice</persName>. And also shall and will so provide for the said <persName
               ref="/tei-learning-docs-boston-colle/files/B_personography.xml#pers_BE1"
               >apprentice</persName> that he do not become in any wise a Charge to the said Town of
               <placeName>Shawangunck</placeName>, but off and from all charges shall save the said
            Town harmless and indemnified, and at the end of the said term shall and will provide
