Dear Mr. Isbister,

Your recapitulation of our arrangement is perfectly correct. But the fact still remains that I sold you “Young Mrs Jardine” as a 2 – vol volume novel – & it was re-sold as a 3 vol volume novel – At least, Messrs Hurst & Blackett assert this, & you deny it – of course – I say no more. – Still, whatever may be your legal rights, to re-sell my book without telling me, & without offering me the re-purchase of the copy-right – was a breach of the courtesy & friendship which has always existed between us: & it has caused me something more than regret. Whether or not my story has been “a success” – or has “made more enemies than friends” – is quite beside the question. Your Editor read it, & approved & accepted it – After that it took its chance.

I return the signed receipt: & remain Very truly yours DMCraik –
