Friday, Aug August 5 - /87 1887 The Corner House Shortlands, R.O. Kent. My darling child

Your post card came this morning. – I have been so thankful you were safe away – & knew nothing of all the trouble. The enclosed letters tell you everything -

Read them and burn them. — Everybody seems in trouble. —

The house is empty but peaceful — Nobody comes – except Connie & Bel

I was very tired yesterday – Bel had tea with me & was awfully kind. Papa and I had an evening together – with little Blackie – who sat alternately on his shoulders and my lap – Today I feel better – & am trying to do my work. –

Carlie Cockerell wrote such a nice letter — asking what they had done to offend us that we never met — I answered that there was nothing amiss — except that I did not like his grandfather — & asked him to bring Olive over to dinner tomorrow. –

On Sunday Papa and I shall go to the funeral. —

That is all. — I am glad my child is happy — give my love to them all
