                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to facilitate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded. </p>

                <p>The translation you have kindly accepted is taken from a little volume entitled
                        “<title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#NouvelleMoraliFrancescoSoave">Nouvelle
                        morali di Francesco Soave</title>” printed at <placeName
                        ref="CraikSiteInde.xml#Avignon">Avignon</placeName>
                    <date when="1816">1816</date> — It is a collection of little stories, &amp; true
                    histories: by various authors. The one I chose is by <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#BramieriLuigi">L. Braumieri</persName> &amp; seemed
                    to me to bear the impress of truth. It may have been translated before — but
                    never to my knowledge. I need not assure you that my translation is strictly
                    from the original.</p>
                <p>Allow me to thank you for your prompt &amp; kind acceptance of my little
                    translation, and to mention, what I was unwilling to do before, that I am happy
                    to number among my friends <persName ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HallAnnaMaria">Mrs.
