                    accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the
                    manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts,
                    abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are
                    hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik
                    uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard
                    Oxford English Dictionary spelling to faciliate searching. The long s is not
                    encoded.</p>

                <p> Anybody may correct this by the copy I sent – &amp; it does teaze me so to go
                    over <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#HeadOfTheFamily">the Head </title>
                    again. Could not the printer’s reader <unclear reason="illegible">or
                        thing</unclear> do it? – Do you know <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#MorrisJane">Mrs. Morris</persName> sent me some
                    present <add place="above"> – basket of flowers of fruit</add> – which I
                    returned – Will you manage that she knows the fact <add place="above">of my
                        returning it</add> as the messenger might have kept <mod type="subst"><del
                            rend="strikethrough">them</del>
                        <add place="above">it</add></mod> &amp; said I took it in.</p>
                <p>I <hi rend="underline">could not</hi> receive her presents. She bound my books
                    magnificently &amp; she presented them to <persName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ChisholmMrs" cert="low">Mrs. Chisholm</persName> as
                    her own! <add place="above">writing!</add> She spoke of “her last new work
                        <title corresp="CraikSiteIndex.xml#Avillion">Avillion</title>” – to somebody
                    else!! – And cruelest cut of all – she says Messrs <orgName
                        ref="CraikSiteIndex.xml#ChapmanHall">Chapman &amp; Hall</orgName> give or
                    have given her <measure type="currency">£400</measure> for each of the Novels!!!
                    – </p>
                <p>– I believe she is daft on this subject, poor soul, or else I should certainly
                    take proceedings against her – But she does herself more harm than me – </p>
                <p>The messenger said he had got my address from your house – My simple answer was –
                    “that I had no aquaintance of the name of Morris, &amp; therefore had rather not
                    take the parcel in.” – With a twinge, I confess – for the flowers smelled <hi
                        rend="underline">so</hi> sweet! – &amp; I do like flowers so – But of course
                    I had no alternative – </p>
