                    – to both himself – publisher &amp; author.</p>

Our aim in this edition has been to transcribe the content of the letters as accurately as possible without reproducing the physical appearance of the manuscript. Craik’s spelling, punctuation, underlining, superscripts, abbreviations, additions and deletions are retained, except for words which are hyphenated at the end of a line, which we have silently emended. Where Craik uses a non-standard spelling, we have encoded both her spelling and the standard Oxford English Dictionary spelling to faciliate searching. The long s is not encoded.
5 Brecknock Crescent June 22 nd My dear Sir

The printer sends me word that 50 of my M.S. manuscript pages will be wanted to make up the 320 – dc – of Vol Volume 3 rd

Now though I have matter all arranged in my mind for three chapters – say between 35 & 40 pages – I do not think it will be possible to eke out more without inquiring the succeeding interest – in fact spinning it thread-bare –

I am rather sorry that the 1st Chap Chapter – of Vol Volume 3 – was added to Vol Volume II – because as it stood – the interest was complete. one thread of the story very wound up with Leigh's death – moreover it was, I believe – a good chapter to end the vol volume – with – & Vol Volume III begins upon an entire new please place in the narrative. If the chapter is not worked off – & a thin second Vol Volume – is not quite impracticable, I think it would be much better restored to its place.

It is a great pity the printer did not cast off the M.S. manuscript rightly at first – which would have prevented all this other vexations – to both himself – publisher & author.

Nevertheless, now I have the proofs & M.S. manuscript before me – I see clearly how much better Vol Volume 3 can be made – & it will be a real pleasure to me to make it so. –

You may be sure that I will spare no pains to make the novel worthy of success – for your interest & my own – which in this are so completely united.
